In this joint project, an automated screening tool was developed through collaboration between technical and clinical sites to accelerate the early detection of children with autism spectrum disorder. Speech and facial expression recognition is used to identify symptoms that are particularly likely to indicate the presence of an autism spectrum disorder. The project was successfully completed at the end of November 2025, having started in June 2022. The interdisciplinary joint project IDEAS - Identification of Autism Spectrum Disorder through Speech and Facial Expression Recognition - has succeeded in developing a demonstrator for a digital screening tool for children with ASD, enabling affected children and their families to receive lower-threshold and earlier diagnostic care.

The IDEAS research project (identification of autism spectrum disorder through speech and facial expression recognition) was funded by the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR, KMU innovativ funding line) from 2022 to 2025.

Particularly noteworthy is the close and trusting cooperation within the network: In addition to TU Dortmund University, KIZMO GmbH - Clinical Innovation Center for Medical Technology Oldenburg, Leipzig University Hospital - Clinic and Polyclinic for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Psychotherapy and Psychosomatics, SpeechCare GmbH and Fraunhofer IDMT were involved.
