Meta-analysis of the relation between children’s grammatical skills and mathematical learning (MetaGraM) (since 2024)
The MetaGraM project (“Meta-analysis of the relation between children’s grammatical skills and mathematical learning”) led by Dr. Alexander Röhm (Fachgebiet CHIP) and Dr. Eva Wimmer (Fachgebiet Sprache & Kommunikation) has been funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) since November 2024.
Building up on a previously conducted systematic review of 95 empirical studies, the funded project performs a meta-analysis to assess the overall statistical evidence from all included studies, with the aim of identifying cross-cutting significance, effect sizes, and the influence of moderators (e.g., working memory, intelligence, language) between the two domains of competence. The overarching goal is to derive evidence-based recommendations for the training of prospective teachers and to optimize teaching, assessment, and interventions in mathematics as well as in the areas of language and learning. The project has already been funded during the preparatory phase in 2023 as part of the Young Academy at TU Dortmund University. Collaborating partners are Prof. Dr. Jörg-Tobias Kuhn (Research Unit: Methoden der empirischen Bildungsforschung), Prof. Dr. Marcus Hasselhorn (DIPF Leibniz Institut für Bildungsforschung und Bildungsinformation) and Dr. Nurit Viesel-Nordmeyer (ADEF, University Aix-Marseille, France).
