Diagnostics of speech and visual abilities in pediatric check-ups
pediatric preventive examinationsin speech and vision
The Faculty of Rehabilitation Sciences at TU Dortmund University is conducting a needs survey among pediatricians and adolescent physicians throughout Germany in the two specialist areas of "Vision, Visual Impairment and Blindness" and "Language & Communication".
Interested pediatricians can find the link to the ongoing survey in the field of Language & Communication here:

The background to the needs assessment is the anecdotally reported difficulty of some pediatricians in diagnosing language development disorders. The short amount of time allotted for screenings in the first to sixth year of life makes a comprehensive diagnosis unrealistic. For children growing up multilingually in particular, this can be a challenge in differentiating between a language development disorder and typical German-as-a-second-language acquisition. The survey will determine the actual training needs and wishes of pediatricians practicing in Germany.
The survey for the vision diagnostics carried out in the preventive medical check-ups has already been completed. The results will be reported in the July newsletter of the Berufsverband der Kinder- und Jugendärzt*innen e.V. (BVKJ). The survey for the area of speech development diagnostics is also supported by the BVKJ. Following both needs surveys, a joint follow-up project is planned in cooperation with the BVKJ, within which measures for further training in the surveyed areas of need in the context of vision and language will be developed and evaluated.
The study is being led by Prof. Dr. Sarah Weigelt, Dr. Katharina Limbach(Department of Vision) and Prof. Dr. Anna-Lena Scherger(Department of Language) and is being carried out with the assistance of Farina Neumann, Michelle Krause and Lena Rutinowski.
